2–4pm each Thursday during the month of May
In the current period of commemorations, of looking back and looking forward, this year’s Bealtaine tour and workshop series will focus on the theme of time and is facilitated by artist Julie Forrester and art historian Michael Waldron.
Week 1: A moment twice lived
Our tour and workshop series begins with a look at new work by Irish contemporary artist Martin Healy. A moment twice lived (2016) explores the notion of time and how we perceive and experience it through dreams and reality. Following a tour of the exhibition, the workshop will encourage us to work from memory.
Week 2: The Eve of St Agnes
Commissioned by Harold Jacob in 1923, Harry Clarke’s watercolour sketches for The Eve of St Agnes window (1924) draw on the poetry of John Keats to create a Romantic vision of nocturnal ritual and superstition. After our tour, the workshop will focus on objects that invoke powerful feelings.
Week 3: In a Short Time
Referencing everyday materials, Maud Cotter’s In a Short Time (2002) brings to mind both the beauty of the mundane and the bittersweet quality of brief, frozen moments. Our tour will encourage discussion of this quiet sculpture before a workshop based on association, context, and memory.
Week 4: Big Bang, Will the Crack Last?
Lonradh (1993), James Scanlon’s radiant stained glass window on the main staircase of the gallery, provides the light-hearted focus for our final tour. The workshop will draw on the expressive colours of this piece, while we reflect on the artist’s big ideas and cheerful puns.
This programme takes place from 2–4pm each Thursday during the month of May. No art experience is required and each event is free of charge, though booking is essential as places are limited. All are welcome, from the complete beginner seeking to try something new, to those wishing to develop their existing skills.
